Maria C. Bernhardsson is a vibrant artist residing and creating art in Sweden. The majority of her pieces are inspired by the structure and shapes of buildings. Bernhardsson travels globally to capture and draw houses for inspiration in her artwork on canvas and paper. She manipulates the hues and shading of each house while considering the collective essence of observing a group of these structures. Afterwards, she includes whimsical touches like flowers and animals to create a homier feel in the houses.
Despite her emphasis on bright colors, patterns, and mixtures, all her pieces exude a sense of warmth, coziness, and familiarity. The ambiguous arrangement of the subjects in her artwork results in a sense of familiarity that is almost universally recognized.
Bernhardsson states of her process, “The colorway is very important to me when I paint. I love to combine as many colors as possible at the same time. Contrasts, strong colors/ bright pastels, plain/structured, dark/bright in a cubistic, skewed, dreamy, and naive way.
