Overview
Edward Bawden CBE RA (1903–1989) was one of the most significant artists of his time. His long career spanned much of of the twentieth century, and comfortably straddled boundaries between the fine and applied arts. His work was inspired by nature, often with a hint of the mythical and mischievous humor as is evident in his ‘Wave’ wallpaper.

Wave’s lattice form firmly frames the witty narrative. In a robust structure where the wave breaks intersect with the waves themselves there is an unexpected amount of movement – the mermaids and fish gleefully appear and disappear as the ‘starved’ inking on the waves adds to the effect of shimmering, broken light. As if we are all at sea.
